Ares

Ares The God of War; Son of Zeus and Hera

"You betray your own bidding, o king of kings. I thought we were not to intervene...or does that not apply to you?"
Ares to Zeus in A Call to Arms.

Ares is one of the Greek gods and the son of Zeus and Hera. He was a minor antagonist in the first season of the Blood of Zeus.

History[]

Backstory[]

Ares was born as the first-born son of the wedlock of Zeus and Hera and the older twin brother of Enyo. He grew up on Olympus alongside his family.

Throughout the Series[]

Season 1[]

A Call to Arms[]

Ares appears atop a rocky mountain as clouds, lightning, and thunder rumbles above. He looks down at Elias, who is later revealed as Zeus in disguise.

He confronts Zeus about not agreeing with the gods to interfere with the war between the demons and the humans. Ares seems to disagree with his father's actions, foreshadowing their negative relationship.

He asks Zeus if he genuinely thinks that Heron, his paternal half-brother, is worthy enough to defend humanity against the demons. Zeus tells Ares he does.

The Raid[]

In an arena, Ares faces his (paternal) half-brothers, Apollo and Hermes. He breaks Apollo's chariot and manages to catch the speeding Hermes. But then Zeus arrives angry and asks Ares what he had told Hera as only he knew where he was; however, Hera also arrives, stating she already knew it all.

Ares is then up against Apollo, who is riding on his chariot. Ares narrowly misses Apollo's blade as it scrapes the front of his helmet and bends backward just in time. Ares swiftly slams his hammer hard enough on the ground to cause Apollo to lose balance and fall off the chariot.

Apollo recovers and promptly clashes weapons with Ares, only to be caught off guard once again by Hermes, who begins to use his super-speed to circle Ares. Ares catches Hermes by the necklace and throws him into Apollo, sending them flying across the arena.

Ares is soon struck by lightning, signaling the arrival of his father, Zeus. Zeus is upset and asks Ares about what he told his mother, Hera. Ares doesn't have a chance to tell Zeus about what he told Hera and Zeus's whereabouts because Hera shows up anyway to confront Zeus herself. Ares joins Apollo and Hermes as the two have it out before them.

Later, Ares is seen alongside the Olympian gods against Zeus, with Hera claiming that Zeus had crossed the line by directly interfering in mortal lives.

Escape or Die[]

During Zeus' lightning attack to stop Heron and Seraphim's fight, Ares is seen fighting with his sister, Athena.

The Fields of the Dead[]

Ares accompanies his mother, Hera, in taking the golden bracer from Hermes, which is needed to control The Cauldron. Hera discovers Hermes and is soon attacked by Ares. Hera takes this opportunity to take the bracer. Apollo saves Hermes as Ares is about to deliver the final blow, distracting Ares. Ares and Apollo fight.

At the end of the quarrel, Ares throws Apollo's limp body into the ocean.

War for Olympus[]

Ares is on Hera's side and fights alongside the Giant and demons, riding a dark horse. However, he reformed during the battle as the giants betrayed Hera and tried to kill their temporary god allies as well as their enemies among the gods.

Season 2[]

In A Shadow Emerges, Ares is seen participating in the civil war against Zeus' army.

In Winter is Born, a flashback reveals that Ares was romantically interested in Persephone, but because she rejected Ares and Hades' interference in their relationship, it never came to be.

In Funeral Games, Ares is seen with Aphrodite in his majestic black chariot; he sees Heron and decides to test him and judge his actions. He and Heron compete in a competition to decide who will inherit Zeus's ring. The fight is interrupted by Hera, who is displeased by the attitudes of both Ares and Heron. Artemis and Apollo threaten Hera and Ares if they don't leave; Ares responds by calling them bastards. He and Apollo face each other fiercely until Hera again stops what would have been a fight. Ares is also seen at Zeus's fleece ceremony, where Zeus says goodbye to Ares and the other Olympian gods. Zeus leaves his son with the words, "Anything worthwhile must be earned, Ares. Don't allow your talents to be squandered." Later, when Zeus bestows Heron his ring, Ares is visibly upset by the choice.

In The Three Trials, Ares, although weakened by Demeter's parasitic spores, vows to participate in the challenge set forth by Gaia. He arrives at the location with Aphrodite, Enyo, and a legion of his army and participates in a three-way battle between Hades and Athena's sides.

Season 3[]

In A Breath Before Dying, Ares sought to face off against Typhon, but Aphrodite admonished him from doing it. Despite this, he does so and dies trying.

In Hellebore, Ares and Hephaestus' souls are brought to the Abyss by a Furie, where Kronos demands they reveal where Zeus is being held captive. In a futile attempt, Ares tries to attack Kronos. Still, as an incorporeal spirit, he cannot touch it and instead passes through it, only to be held at its mercy and sequentially tossed into the Abyss, where his soul is destroyed after the Abyss' light hits him.

In Brothers' Journey, a funeral is held on Olympus for Hephaestus and Ares, with many of the Gods in attendance. After Hera arrived, she vowed they'll be avenged and they should all unite.

In A Champion's Challenge, Ares is immortalized in the stars to keep his memory and humanity's desire for glory alive.

Physical Appearance[]

Ares wears an dark gray chest plate and gray pteruges (skirts worn by Greek/Roman soldiers). He has black hair and strangely attractive red eyes. He is shown to have spiked shoulder pads holding his cape in place and forearm cuffs with spikes. He has a faded buzzcut and a clean beard. He is the tallest and most muscular of Zeus' sons, possibly because he is Zeus and Hera's son.

When in battle, he wears his war helmet, which is dark gray like the rest of his outfit and has a protruding arch. The helmet has three spikes spaced from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the nose.

Personality[]

Ares appears to be siding with Hera and is against his father, Zeus, showing his preference towards his mother and dislike of his father and his actions. Despite his boldness, he still fears his father's power.

Throughout the show, he is usually seen as calm and stern. There are not many moments where he displays many strong emotions except in war and combat, where he has a bolder, bloodthirsty, and violent attitude.

In season 2, more aspects of his personality are revealed. Ares, despite his usual calm and stern attitude, has his fair share of anger issues, showing outbursts of rage against people he has an issue with or if he is insulted. He hates the fact that his father sired many illegitimate children out of wedlock and openly tells Heron that he hates bastards and half-breeds, insulting Heron's mother as well.

He also appears to be jealous as he grows enraged when Persephone chooses his uncle Hades over him, leading to a brief fight among them.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Olympian Deity Physiology: Ares belongs to a race of ancient and inconceivably powerful beings known as the Olympian gods. Because of this heritage, he possesses the conventional superhuman physical attributes of an Olympian god.
    • Immortality: Like all the Greek gods, Ares is seemingly ageless and cannot be killed by conventional means.
    • Immense Strength: Ares possesses immense physical strength. While his level of strength is undisclosed, he is strong enough to shake an entire island during his battle with Apollo. He breaks Apollo's chariot and manages to catch the speeding Hermes.
    • Immense Durability: Ares possesses immense levels of superhuman durability. The tissues of Ares' body are considerably harder and more resistant to physical injury than those of a mortal being.

    • Immense Reflexes: Ares possesses reflexes that are heightened to the point of being virtually instantaneous, enough so to react in response to Hermes, the swiftest of the Greek gods.
    • Accelerated Healing: Ares can heal from injuries at an accelerated rate. However, depending on how severe his injuries are, some injuries he's sustained can heal in days, and others take longer.
  • Limited Magic Ability: While not as accomplished at magic as many of his fellow Olympians, Ares can sense the presence of other gods and demons and use magic, call other gods, summon weapons from Olympus, and transport himself by teleportation to Olympus and to Earth at will.
  • War Manipulation: Ares is an expert in all areas of warfare. As God of War, Ares has the power to influence all forms of conflict, including mental, physical, spiritual, and conceptual ones, regardless of the area and numbers involved, control how they progress, and draw power from the conflict alone and the dying.

Abilities[]

  • Master Combatant: Ares mastered various hand-to-hand combat skills and all of the ancient Greek forms of armed and unarmed combat. Also, he has mastered all modern and ancient weaponry forms. He is well-versed in military tactics, torture, and combat engineering. Ares is one of the most talented and ruthless warriors. His kicks and punches can send his foes flying. He fought and successfully bested both Hermes and Apollo in armed combat on two separate occasions.

Equipment[]

  • War Hammer: Ares wields a black spiked war hammer with lethal efficiency.
  • Broadsword: Ares once wielded a broadsword in the past during a fight against his Uncle Hades.
  • Olympian Battle Armor: Ares wears Olympian battle armor made of enchantment magic.

Relationships[]

Zeus[]

1x03 The Raid Zeus and Ares 2
"You betray your own bidding, o king of kings. I thought we were not to intervene...or does that not apply to you?"
Ares to Zeus in A Call to Arms.

The relationship between Ares and his father, Zeus, is complex and often marked by conflicts and rivalries. Ares is the son of Zeus and Hera, making him the brother of many of the major gods and goddesses, including Athena, the goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare. On the one hand, Zeus values Aares's ability as a warrior and favors him in battles. Ares was often portrayed as a powerful and impulsive god who could wreak great destruction on the battlefield. In this sense, Zeus respected his strength and role as the god of war.

On the other hand, Ares was often seen as impulsive, violent, and often disagreeable, which made him unpopular among the other gods and goddesses, including Zeus. Ares also had a tense relationship with Athena, who represented a more strategic and disciplined approach to war, in contrast to Ares' more chaotic approach. In many mythological stories, Zeus is depicted as reprimanding or punishing Ares for his behavior, sometimes even putting him in his place when his arrogance or impulsiveness crosses the line. However, despite their differences, Zeus and Ares were still family and part of the Olympian pantheon. Zeus would occasionally intervene on behalf of his son when he was in trouble.

Hera[]

Hera and Ares
"I will not let bastards determine our fate. My mother has always been just. Only when Zeus strayed would her temper betray her. What foul did she bear in that?"
Ares to Apollo in Funeral Games.

The relationship between Ares and his mother, Hera, is also quite complex as Ares is the son of Zeus and Hera. Hera spoiled Ares since he was born and insisted that he always had more privileges than his brothers, which deeply irritated Zeus, who wanted all his children to have the same rights as Olympus. Hera helped shape Ares' arrogant personality due to his upbringing. She was often depicted as the mother who stood by her son, even when other gods and goddesses criticized or opposed him.

Enyo[]

Aphrodite, Ares and Enyo

The relationship between Ares and his twin sister, Enyo symbolizes the destructive and uncontrollable nature of war. While Ares represents the physical strength and ferocity of a warrior, Enyo embodies the chaos and destruction that accompanies war. Their combined presence in mythology serves as a reminder of the horrors and devastation that war brings. The relationship between Ares and Enyo is one of mutual embodiment of war and destruction. They are often depicted together, symbolizing the totality of war's brutal and chaotic nature.

Aphrodite[]

Ares and Aphrodite
"Something's foot. I have no doubt, and I will not be made a fool. Are you coming?"
Ares to Aphrodite in The Three Trials

Ares and Aphrodite's relationship is marked by love. They are half-siblings, both children of Zeus, but with different mothers. They are also lovers. Ares and Aphrodite are seen together in the second season, appearing closer than in the first.

Apollo[]

Apollo and Ares
"Who are you to speak for Olympus? You're just a bastard."
Ares to Apollo in Funeral Games.

The relationship between Ares and his half-brother Apollo is complex and often reflects their different domains and personalities. Ares always had a rivalry with his brother Apollo, as Apollo was always Zeus' favorite son. On one hand, both Ares and Apollo were considered powerful and important gods within the Greek pantheon. They were both associated with aspects of warfare, with Ares representing the violent and chaotic nature while Apollo was seen as more strategic and disciplined.

Hermes[]

1x03 The Raid Ares and Hermes Fighting

The relationship between Ares and his half-brother, Hermes, is not as prominently featured as some other relationships.

Athena[]

1x06 Back to Olympus Ares and Athena 2
"You misunderstood me, sister. I'm not asking for permission."
Ares to Athena in Funeral Games.

The relationship between Ares and his half-sister, Athena, is often portrayed as one of rivalry and opposition.

Heron[]

Ares and Heron
"I can't decide who I hate more, Heron's whore mother or his mongrel brother, Seraphim. Why are you still here? You'll never be one of us, half-blood. Don't fool yourself, Heron. You'll always have mortal blood running through your veins."
Ares to Heron in Funeral Games.

The relationship between Ares and his half-brother, Heron, is one of rivalry and conflict. Ares and Heron are both powerful figures who represent different aspects of warfare and heroism. Ares embodies brutal and violent aspects, often favoring chaos and destruction. Conversely, Heron is a hero known for his bravery, strength, and cunning.

Overall, Ares and Heron's relationship is one of rivalry. Their interactions highlight the contrast between Ares' reckless and destructive nature and Heron's disciplined and heroic character.

Alexia[]

"You're lucky I'm fond of your father and the wars he's waged. For his sake, I'll allow you to speak out of turn. But watch your tongue, Amazonian. You are amongst gods. And you're right. If it weren't for Heron's whore mother... we wouldn't be here. My father would still be alive."
Ares to Alexia in Funeral Games.

Persephone[]

Ares and Persephone
"So, it's true. There's someone else."
Ares to Persephone in Winter is Born.

Long before the series of events, Demeter handpicked Ares as a potential future husband for Persephone. However, Persephone was repulsed by Ares's presence. Ares is shown to be quite possessive of Persephone, as shown when he demands the latter the identity of the man she's dated. Persephone refuses to rat Hades out and demands Ares to give up his attempts to woo her. Ares doesn't handle Persephone's rejection too well as he attempts to remove her clothes to force her to try on the armor he had made for her before engaging in battle with Hades.

Trivia[]
