"The future is in constant motion. Outcomes are always in flux."
―The Fates to Heron in Back to Olympus.

The Fates are a trio of goddesses that weave the paths that lay before each human.

History[]

Very little is known about the history of the Fates.

Throughout the Series[]

In Back to Olympus, the Sisters of Fate call Heron and show him what path lies ahead of him, explaining that the fate of the world is in his hands. As his path reaches a crossroad, they inform him that he must make a choice that will affect the fate of many.

Appearances[]

The Fates are very similar in appearance. The main difference is that they appear different in age, with Clotho appearing the youngest as a young girl, Lachesis as an adult woman and Atropos as an elderly lady.

They have pale gray skin, purple eyes, and wear black robes and gray shawls with pale patterns woven into them.

Personalities[]

The Fates are similar in their mysterious natures and appear all-knowing due to their power to foresee the future. However, each of them has their own traits and quirks that set them apart from each other. Atropos is the most serious, Lachesis is the most patient, and Clotho is the most playful.

Contrary to what Heron thought about Fate, they were not offended by his words or behavior and instead took the time to explain that Fate and Free Will coexist, using a metaphor to explain how Fate is simply circumstances while Free Will is choice, and how Fate is easy to foresee while Free Will increases the number of possible outcomes with no certainty as to what may or may not be the result from a mix of circumstances and choices, thus making it more difficult to foresee the future. They can be counted as patient and having their own personalities.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Foresight: The Fates can see into the future and predict the possibility of certain outcomes. Admittedly, they claim that since the future is in constant motion, outcomes are always in flux.
  • Thread Manipulation: The Fates can manipulate the threads they weave, causing them to form into unique and interesting shapes. This was seen when the Fates weaved a baby like-doll and manipulated it to depict to Heron that free will and fate coexist.

Known Members[]

  • Clotho
  • Lachesis
  • Atropos

Trivia[]

  • In Greek Mythology, the Moirae, better known as the Fates, were the incarnations of destiny. Their members were Clotho the spinner (birth), Lachesis the alotter (life) and Atropos the unturnable (death).
  • They appear to be based on the Triple Goddess, represented as the Maiden (Clotho), the Mother (Lachesis) and the Crone (Atropos), even though the Fates are sisters.
