Past is Prologue is the second episode of the Blood of Zeus series.
Synopsis[]
After he completes a quest for adamantine ore, Heron learns the truth about his birth from his mother, Electra, as well as the identity of his father.
Summary[]
In Heron's dream, Electra gives birth to a boy. King Periander comes and is happy to see it's a boy and that the baby has his eyes. Just then, Ariana informs him a second child is coming, and it's another boy. She explains there are two placentas, which means there are two fathers. Discovering that the newest baby boy has blue eyes, Periander becomes furious and attempts to kill the boy, but an eagle storms in and saves it.
Awakening from his nap, Heron continues climbing the mountain to reach the top and find the rosebush that Elias tasked him with doing. Upon reaching the top of the mountain, Heron finds a blue rose bush. He starts digging and takes the ore back to Elias. Heron tells Elias he had seen a symbol of two winged horses rearing up and meeting in the middle. Elias tells him that it is the Seal of Corinth and that dreams can be deceiving. He explains that Phobetor brings three Oneiroi and nightmares, illusions meant to deceive and confuse by Phantasos, and visions of the truth brought forth by Morpheus.
Heron tells Electra that he had a dream in which she was a queen. Electra confirms she used to be married to King Periander, but they had to leave. She explains that the marriage was prearranged, and not long after she married the king, she caught a god's eye. She didn't know that, and one day, her husband was kind and loving as the god was turning into him, while the next day, he was cold and demeaning. She thought this was his temperament and despised one, but loved the other. She eventually figured out he was a different man, and upon questioning him, he revealed he was Zeus. But as he reveals himself, Hera sees him, and Apollo warns him quickly and takes his place. However, Hera remains suspicious and starts observing her. Upon learning Electra is pregnant with Zeus' child, she visits the Oneiroi, telling them to appear in King Periander's dreams and tell him that he will have twins, one of which isn't his.
Periander swore that he would kill the child if it weren't him, but Zeus came and saved it. He attempts to throw the child from the balcony. However, Electra stops him and stabs him in the eye, causing him to fall and die. Zeus then teleports them elsewhere to save them from the guards and enshrouds the village in darkness so Hera can't see Electra and Heron. Electra explains that if they leave the village, Hera will kill them and that his brother was supposed to inherit King Periander's throne but was killed by his uncle. Heron isn't happy as Elias is more of a father than Zeus, but seeing Electra's expression, he realizes that Elias is Zeus. He gets even angrier, calling Zeus a coward for letting her live like that, but finds the sword Elias told him they would make and angrily throws it.
Alexia inspects the map she took from the demon and realizes there is a map within the map. Demons then reveal themselves wanting the map back. Alexia's troops are easily defeated, but she manages to escape.
Elias confronts Heron and reveals his true form of Zeus. He wants Heron to forgive him for everything; however, Heron tells him he doesn't want to see him ever again, and so Zeus leaves. Alexia then appears, being chased by a Cerebus.
