The Primordial Gods (also known as the Ancient Gods) are the first race of immortals to come into existence and were born directly from the void of Chaos. Unlike the Titans and the gods, they are essentially sentient aspects of the universe itself and have absolute and total control over it, so therefore they cannot truly be killed, except if they are thrown into the abyss.
History[]
In the beginning there was only Chaos, the first primordial, composed of all the elements of existence, mixed together. At a certain point, from Chaos emerged Gaia, a deity who would personify the Earth itself. After Gaia, other primordial deities emerged from Chaos: such as Uranus, the personification of the Heavens; Tartarus, the personification of the Abyss; Pontus, the personification of the Sea; Nyx, the personification of Night, and her husband Erebus, the personification of Darkness. Akhlys also emerged, a deity who would personify of the Misery and Poison.
Over time, the Primordials united with each other and conceived other deities: Nyx and Erebus together generated Aether (the Light and the Upper Air), Hemera (the Day) and Elpis (the Hope); Gaia and Uranus generated the Ourae (the Mountains) and the Nesoi (the Islands).
Kingdom of Uranus[]
Uranus and Gaia together conceived the Titans, the Cyclopes, the Hecatoncheires and the Primordial Giants. But while Gaia loved all her children equally, Uranus feared their power, going so far as to imprison them in Tartarus. Gaia, disgusted by this act, begged her children to rebel. Only Kronos dared to answer the call. Armed with a sickle given to him by his mother, Kronus attacked his father and mutilated him with the sickle, thus ending his reign. When Uranus died, from his blood were born the Furies, deities who would personify revenge.
Kingdom of Kronos[]
Cronus became the new ruler of the Universe, taking his sister Rhea as his wife. But a prophecy foretold that one day he would be overthrown by one of his own children, just as he had done to his father. Out of fear, he decided to devour them as soon as they were born. Rhea, determined to save their youngest son, Zeus, gave him a bandaged stone instead. Zeus was taken to the Hidden Realm, where he was raised by Gaia and protected by the Curetes, who banged their swords on their shields to cover the baby's cries from Cronus' hearing. Once he was an adult, Zeus appointed the Curetes as guardians of the Hidden Realm and forced Kronus to spit out his siblings: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades and Poseidon.
Titanomachy[]
Thus began the Titanomachy, the war that pitted the Olympians led by Zeus against the Titans led by Kronus. During this conflict, the Primordial Gods remained neutral. Gaia, seeing that the conflict between the two factions was spreading, convinced Zeus to free the Cyclopes and the Hecatonchires; who repaid the lord of Olympus by joining the gods in the war.
Eventually the Titans were defeated and imprisoned in Tartarus, while the gods ascended to rule the Universe, with the Primordial Gods becoming overseers of their work.
Physiology[]
Unlike gods and Titans, the Primordials do not merely control the elements and concepts of the universe, but are themselves the elements and concepts: they are a living personification of the components of the universe. As such, they possess power greater than that of any god, titan, or giant.
Another key difference is that they are truly immortal: even if their physical bodies were to be destroyed, they would continue to exist and compose the universe.
Psychological Characteristics[]
The primordial gods are firmly devoted to maintaining the order and balance of the Universe, trying in every way to preserve it, even resorting to extreme methods. They believe in ideals such as peace and forgiveness, trying to teach them to others. They prefer to act as supervisors of the actions of the immortals; they do not tolerate the latter performing unworthy actions or abusing their power for personal gain.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Physiology of the Primordial Deity:Primordial deities are the first beings to exist. They predate the creation of the universe and embody abstract concepts as well as the fundamental elements of nature.
- Immortality: Ancient beyond the very beginning of the universe, the primordial gods transcend time and death. Though their physical forms may be annihilated, their eternal essence endures through the ages, present in every corner of reality.
- Abstract Incarnations: Primordial deities are the incarnations of abstract concepts, such as night for Nyx or darkness for Erebus, but also of elemental concepts of nature, such as earth for Gaia or sea for Pontus.
- Nigh-omnipotence: The primordial gods are the most powerful entities in the universe, surpassing all other beings—be they gods, titans, giants, or monsters—in strength, will, and authority. Their power borders on the absolute, beyond all mortal or divine measure.
- Individual Powers: Being personifications of concepts and elements of the universe, the Primordials have absolute and omnipotent control over their respective domain; for example, Gaia had absolute dominion over everything related to the earth, such as soil and plants; Uranus dominated everything related to the sky, such as clouds, lightning and weather; Nyx dominated everything related to the night, such as darkness and celestial bodies.
- Size Manipulation: Primordial Gods possess the ability to manipulate their size at will, growing to the point where they touch the heavens or shrinking to the point where they go unnoticed by mortals.
Weaknesses[]
- Kronos' Scythe: a formidable weapon created by Gaia and is the only weapon capable of destroying the physical body of a Primordial.
