Blood of Zeus Wiki

The Underworld is the realm of the dead, the deceased's final resting place. The Underworld is divided into various sections and is ruled by Hades and Persephone.

The deceased entered the Underworld by crossing the River Styx ferried across by Charon, who charged an obolus, a small coin, as a fee.

History[]

The Underworld is the realm of the dead, who have existed since long before the creation of the world. It was once ruled by the Titans.

It is a dimension parallel to Earth, serving as a resting place for the dead.

After defeating Typhon and stripping him of his power, Zeus decided to divide the world's kingdoms into three: the heavens, the seas, and the underworld. Each was to be governed by a ruler. Hecate then placed the Eleusinian Stone, along with two other stones—a dark one symbolizing the underworld, and a light blue one representing the oceans—in a pythos for a drawing of lots. Thanks to Hera's trickery, Zeus obtained the Eleusinian Stone, thus receiving command of the heavens. Poseidon inherited the oceans, and Hades the underworld.

Known Locations[]

The Greek Underworld comprises various realms believed to lie beneath the earth or at its farthest reaches.

Five Rivers[]

The five rivers of the Greek Underworld are Acheron (the river of sorrow), Cocytus (the river of lamentation), Phlegethon (the river of burning), Lethe (the river of forgetfulness), and Styx (the river of hate), which forms the boundary between upper and lower worlds.

Elysian Fields[]

The Elysian Fields are one of the main territories of the Underworld, it is an area similar to a beautiful forest with an extensive wheat field, there go the souls of those who were good in life and did heroic acts.

The Three Judges[]

The Three Judges are a group of three demigods, sons of Zeus, who upon dying became the judges of the dead. The soul of the deceased is brought before them and is temporarily given a corporeal form so that he can be judged more easily.

Tartarus[]

Tartarus is one of the most remote regions of the underworld, where all the enemies of the gods are held, as well as the souls of those who committed crimes and sins.

Hades Palace[]

The palace of Hades is the place where Hades and the entire royal family of the underworld live, it is a palace made of onyx and obsidian which is located in the center of the underworld where all the regions of this are connected.

Persephone’s Garden[]

The Garden of Persephone is a large garden full of vegetation and nature which is connected to the Elysian Fields, being one of the few places where sunlight reaches, Queen Persephone is its owner and usually visits and takes care of it when she is not fulfilling her royal duties.

The Abyss of the underworld[]

Described by the Furies as the end of the world, the Pit of the Abyss is located in the depths of hell. Everyone who is thrown into it, whether god or mortal, dead or alive, is completely eradicated from existence and is impossible to ever be brought back, making it the one fate more horrific than dying. According to Hepheastus and Apollo, a god who is forgotten will go into the abyss against their will.

When someone is thrown into the abyss, it first razes them to ash, before their soul is consumed by it and explodes into pure orbs of dark energy that fade from existence, completely erasing what a person ever was in body and soul.

Trivia[]

  • In Greek mythology, the Greek Underworld is an otherworld where souls go after death. The original Greek idea of the afterlife is that, at the moment of death, the soul is separated from the corpse, taking on the shape of the former person, and is transported to the entrance of the Underworld. Good people and bad people would then separate. The Underworld itself—sometimes known as Hades, after its patron god—is described as being either at the outer bounds of the ocean or beneath the depths or ends of the earth. It is considered the dark counterpart to the brightness of Mount Olympus, with the kingdom of the dead corresponding to the kingdom of the gods. Hades is a realm invisible to the living, made solely for the dead.
  • According to Apollo, if a deceased god is forgotten, they can fade away into the abyss of the Underworld, effectively dying.[1]
